Prep Your Space

Updated: Dec 3, 2024

Picture this...you're FINALLY ready to make some headway in the closet/bedroom/cabinet/garage that's been bugging you forever! So you just get to it!!

First of all, kudos to YOU! Jumping right in shows that you're really ready to make some changes and that's a HUGE first step! But before you know it you're surrounded by piles of stuff and the mess that was once semi-contained is now all around you. Eesh - that seems counter-productive and overwhelming and defeating.

We've all been there and even as a pro I'm guilty too! The eagerness to make it better as soon as possible has overrun the need to keep it under control.

So before I tackle any space, my personal home or a client project, I make sure I have my workspace ready. Here's a few steps to make sure you don't make a bigger mess than you started with.

  1. Grab your trash bags

    - You're inevitably going to be throwing away obvious trash no matter what space you're working in. Look for the "low hanging fruit", the easiest decisions you can make in the beginning. This will not only help build your momentum but it will also encourage progress because you feel successful right away.

  1. Set aside an area and/or containers for donations

    - Another category that can be a quick win is pulling out items that you can easily remove from your inventory. This is usually clothes that don't fit (either size or your current style), dishes that you just don't use anymore, products that you got as a sample or gift that don't fit in your routine. If they're still useful but don't have a place or value in your life, they could be a generous gift to others. *More info on where to donate in a future blog.

  1. Create zones where you can separate your categories

    - As you remove items from the drawer, cabinet, shelf, closet you'll begin grouping together "like items". In a bathroom sort, for example, you may end up with dental care, makeup, hair care, lotions, nail care, baby care, and more! As you start to pull everything out and gather it together, you may notice patterns and where the bulk of your items are. This will help you recognize what you need to add to your stash and what you already have plenty of. You will also be able to start planning your space when you put it all back in - minus the trash and donations ;)!

  1. Call me for help!

    - I really wanted to put this one at the top of the list LOL but sometimes you've gotta give it a try on your own first. Or if this just sounds like too much work or too many steps - I totally get you and I agree! Your time is so incredibly valuable - is it really best spent sorting and categorizing and space planning?! Not really in my opinion.

But this is second nature to me and my team and we can't wait to dig in, seriously!!! So this is your official invitation to schedule a consultation with me as soon as you're ready to feel the relief and peace that comes with a space that works for YOU!

I'm ready when you are so start HERE to get the ball rolling!

We'll get in touch with some texts to gather more details about your project. Then we'll do a quick video call to get to know each other better. And then we'll plan a visit to take it all in, get some measurements, and create a game plan. Before you know it you'll be amazed at the progress and the ease you can find your stuff and go about your day!

SO excited to chat with you soon!!
